Skunks are urban mammals and considered as nuisance creature by most homeowners. A lot of people would dread on the idea of meeting this animal in their yard. Skunks can spray when they feel threatened. Getting rid of the nauseating odor can be a challenge. It can cause skin irritation, breathing difficulty, and even temporary blindness. Fortunately, there are simple methods that you can use to drive them away.
Non-Lethal Methods to Keep the Skunks Away
Skunks love to move in the dark; therefore, it will not be common to encounter them on daylight. Once you notice the small holes in your yard, their droppings, and the irritating scent, then this article should serve as your guide in getting rid of them. Depending on your state, killing the skunk may be illegal. Therefore, we listed some of the effective non-lethal removal methods.
Using a Live Trapping Device
Perhaps the best way to get rid of them is to use live traps. There are traps specifically designed for squirrels that will protect you from their obnoxious spray. Nonetheless, you may still opt for the conventional type of live traps. Skunks have poor eyesight; you will have to rely on the bait to encourage them to enter the trap. Placement of the trap is also extremely important. Be sure to place it close to their den or along their path.
Creating Barriers
Skunks love to hide in the dark and tiny spaces under our porch or shed. If this area of your house is accessible, be sure to introduce a barrier that will keep the skunks at bay. Mesh wiring and fencing would be a good choice. You can also surround your property with fence. Skunks are not a good climber, but they have skills in digging. You will have to bury the fence at about 1-2 ft below the ground to ensure that your property is protected. The gap between each post should not be enough for the skunk to squeeze their tiny body.
Eliminate the Things That can Attract the Attention of Skunks
Skunks are scavengers and can be attracted by the things inside our trashcan. If your garbage can is not properly sealed, expect that it can draw the attention of the wildlife creatures such as skunks. Look for a trashcan that comes with a locking mechanism. You can also place a heavy item on top of the cover such as cinderblocks. They can also be attracted by the insects in your yard, using insecticides can decrease the population of grubs and can minimize the unwanted visit of the skunk. Avoid feeding your pets outside. If you can’t avoid this, at least put it away at night.
Not a lot of repellents will work against the skunk. The methods above will help you deter the skunk invasion. Do not wait for them to reproduce since your situation will be more complex by then. Having a preventive measure in place will guarantee you that you will not experience the discomfort and hassles of living with a skunk.
